Following Sunday’s AGM, Board Chairman Nazmul Hassan stated that the goal was to guarantee that all national elite cricket matches would be aired.
In preparation for the establishment of its own TV station, the BCB made two changes to its constitution on Sunday at the 2024 Annual General Meeting in Dhaka. With this channel filling in any gaps, the board hopes to guarantee that every match of competitive cricket it conducts across the nation is televised.
According to BCB President Nazmul Hassan, the TV channel will typically air both home games and those away from home that its broadcast partners are unable to air. Most of our matches are shown on T-Sports and Gazi TV. We want to present those matches if they aren’t able to,” Hassan remarked. “The women’s series cannot be shown because they are airing the men’s Test match. We need to have a choice since we both want to be on TV.
On TV, we also want to broadcast domestic cricket. Everyone believes that it will elevate the national game of cricket. Then, for instance, anyone can observe the level of umpiring in domestic cricket.”
Subclauses 6.17 and 6.20, which are found in the BCB’s constitution’s “scope and responsibility” section, have been amended. The board can improve its banking operations and financial transactions with the addition of the 6.17 subclause. The updated 6.20 sub-clause discusses the possibility of creating “one or more trusts, companies, societies/foundations as necessary to achieve ancillary objectives including enhancement of infrastructural, economic, commercial and social facilities for the development of cricket across the country” .
Nizamuddin Chowdhury, chief executive of BCB, stated that the intention was not to change the national board
We have implemented the changes to add additional dynamism to our banking and financial transactions in accordance with our legal advice,” Chowdhury stated. As you are aware, in order to conduct financial transactions, we must fulfill a number of requirements set forth by Bangladesh Bank.
It is false to say that BCB aspires to become a business enterprise. There is a distinction between a company’s formation and its shares being traded on the stock exchange. We intend to establish BCB TV, but first we must create a legal framework by amending the BCB constitution.”
The AGM brought together the more than 170 councilors (or members) of the BCB from various backgrounds; the 64 districts of Bangladesh account for the majority of these members.
While ad hoc committees manage the majority of cricket in these regions, the BCB has long vowed to establish regional cricket bodies. However, board officials, who are primarily located in the capital Dhaka, have not given these committees any autonomy. Chief BCB Hassan said that before the regional bodies are granted independence, they must first establish their worth.
“Until we are happy with their work, regional cricket associations cannot be free from the center’s interference.” For now, they are not independent. However, our overarching design establishes them as separate entities. It isn’t a decentralized system. It causes disorientation. We are shifting our focus away from Dhaka. It will become decentralized eventually.”
The BCB has given each entity BDT 2 million, or roughly USD 17,400, to organize a competition in the upcoming months. “As a test case, we have instructed them to arrange a T20 tournament. First, we will give them BDT 2 million. We’ll monitor their performance and how they use this money, Hassan stated. “We’re not just handing them money. Not every district receives funding. The only people who receive compensation are those who manage cricket.”
