Wanindu Hasaranga, who Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired during the IPL 2024 auction, will not participate in the 17th season of the lucrative league.
With Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) citing an ailment, powerful wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka has been forced to withdraw from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, a big blow to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
The Sri Lankan Twenty20 international captain is apparently recovering from a left ankle injury that would require rest and therapy, according to a letter that SLC allegedly wrote to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The 26-year-old will therefore be unable to participate for his second IPL team.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru unveiled Hasaranga last year in front of the IPL 2024 auction. Sunrisers Hyderabad has him on their radar. He will now, however, have to watch the IPL from the sidelines as the defending champions are supposedly trying to find a new player.
Hasaranga is said to have consulted with a specialist in Dubai a few days ago, who recommended cautious rest.
In my opinion, yes. He is not available, and Sri Lanka Cricket has notified the BCCI in writing. He traveled to Dubai for three days in order to receive medical advice. The expert’s recommendation is for him to rest rather than play in the IPL this season given the current circumstances,” the player’s management, Shyam, told Cricbuzz.
A few days ago, Shyam informed Cricbuzz that Hasaranga will eventually join the SRH team. But that prospect is now eliminated because the Galle-born player won’t be seen playing, at least not until the T20 World Cup in June.
Concerns about certain international players missing the competition for unknown reasons after entering their names in the auction have been raised by Hasaranga’s absence. It’s interesting to note that Hasaranga returned from Test retirement for the two-match series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka that ended recently. But he was prohibited from participating in it by the ICC due to disciplinary actions. Many believed that the star spinner and the SLC made a calculated strategic move by changing their minds about his Test retirement in order to assist the former avoid missing the first four games of the T20 World Cup later this year.
