Rangana Herath, who has been in the role since June 2021 for two years, gives way to Mushtaq.
Mushtaq Ahmed, a former legspinner for Pakistan, has been named Bangladesh’s spin-bowling coach ahead of the T20 World Cup. This was disclosed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday, indicating Mushtaq’s participation in the training camp leading up to the Twenty20 International series against Zimbabwe in Dhaka the following month. Rangana Herath, who has been in the role since June 2021 for two years, gives way to him.
He will be a part of Bangladesh’s coaching staff alongside head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, fast bowling coach Andre Adams, batting coach David Hemp, and assistant coach Nic Pothas. Mushtaq has extensive experience as a spin bowling coach, having worked for England from 2008 to 2014. He has also had coaching positions with Pakistan from 2014 to 2016 and again from 2020 to 2022.
“Being a spin bowling coach for the Bangladesh cricket team is an enormous honor for me. I am excited about the position and want to share my knowledge with the players because I think they are one of the most dangerous teams in the league and they are very coachable. They are capable, resourceful, and talented enough to defeat anyone. I’ll make an effort to impart that belief to them. The chance to work with the team excites me much,” Mushtaq stated, per an ESPNcricinfo report.
Mushtaq has a brilliant career as a prosperous spinner.
The 53-year-old, who was known for his spin skills, won the 1992 World Cup while he was playing. 52 Tests and 144 ODIs later, he made an enduring impression. In county cricket, he was even more dominant, topping the wicket rankings in 1993 and again from 2003 to 2007. Notably, Mushtaq had an outstanding 1995–1996 Test season, taking nine wickets in back-to-back games in Sydney and Hobart and then 10 in Christchurch.
