The team’s captain, Assad Vala, played admirably but was removed from the game for 21 runs during the last powerplay over.
Batting at number four, Sese Bau took his time on a slow-moving wicket but eventually struck for fifty off forty-three deliveries. The PNG batters struggled with strike rotation as well as hitting boundaries. In the end, wicketkeeper-battler Kiplin Doriga’s critical 27-run knock off 18 balls helped PNG to 136/8 in their 20 overs. Andre Russell was brilliant with the ball, capturing two wickets for 19 runs in his three overs. Alzarri Joseph was a bit expensive, but he also claimed a few wickets.
After Kabua Morea hit four dot balls to start the second innings, Brandon King’s two consecutive boundaries was all the West Indies needed to get going. The dangerous Russell joined Roston Chase at the crease. With an over remaining, the latter, keeping composed, showed the team how valuable he was by hitting an unbeaten 42 off 27 balls, which propelled the two-time champions to victory. Russell finished unbeaten at 15 off 9 balls.
The victorious captain, Rovman Powell, stated as follows:
They have straightforward strategies and play excellent cricket. Getting two points is vital, and we succeeded in doing so. Ten to fifteen is too much (PNG’s total). It’s what we want to focus on as a bowling group. The team has played as a unit 70–80% of the time since I took over as captain. To begin with, he did an excellent job at bowling (referring to Chase). We find it pleasing that he maintained his composure in a high-stakes game in the World Cup towards the conclusion. Were not proficient enough to play at the level we desired. At sixty to seventy percent. With any luck, we can fix that for the next game.
Assad Vala, the losing captain, stated this:
“We knew we missed a trick towards the end.” It would have been lovely to have another 15-20 runs. But it was a good effort to reach 136 after losing early wickets. Yes, I’m pretty pleased with how we battled. got wickets at crucial junctures. We are excited about the opportunity and challenge ahead. Desire to compete with the best players in our finest cricket match. When it comes to the conditions and wickets, he’s been useful (Phil Simmons).
Player of the Match Roston Chase stated, “Very pleased to take the team over the finish line and to start the tournament with a win.” I supported my abilities and gave myself time because I knew that it was difficult for the batters to come in. I observed the PNG batters; they were patient, and once they were in, scoring was simple. I went to Antigua for a training camp, put in a lot of effort, and carried that confidence into the game. We want to play every team the same way we would Australia or India; after all, they (PNG) are here, so we don’t want to treat them lightly.
