Australia won by 39 runs over Oman.
Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign got off to a good start on Thursday, June 6, when the Mitchell Marsh-led team played Oman in the tournament’s tenth match. Even though Australia defeated Oman, they faced a concerning setback when their star bowler Mitchell Starc sustained an injury.
The 34-year-old bowled the opening delivery of his penultimate over against Oman and winced, clutching his calf. Starc left the pitch before finishing his over in the ongoing T20 World Cup match versus Oman.
Cameron Green then came in for the star pacer. As Glenn Maxwell onto the field to finish Starc’s over, physios did arrive to administer the necessary on-field care.
Australia defeated Oman by 39 runs, winning the match by a total of 164 runs while restricting Oman to 125 runs. This was Australia’s first victory of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Starcy was simply a cramp, thus there was no need to risk it: Mitchell Marsh
Mitchell Marsh, the captain of Australia, spoke up following the victory to give an update on Starc’s injury. He disclosed that they did not want to take any chances, therefore they made the precautionary choice to remove Starc from the field.
“I didn’t want to risk it because Starcy was only a cramp. According to Mitchell Marsh, when Starcy says, “I’m okay to go off, you let him go off,” the Hindustan Times cited Marsh as saying.
In addition, Marsh discussed how satisfying it was to win and how the World Cup is becoming less modern and high scores won’t be a frequent occurrence.
“End of game. It feels good to have prevailed. This tournament won’t feature 200 different varieties. This event is kind of returning to the classic Twenty20 format, according to Marsh.
“Took his time and demonstrated his knowledge. The prospect of playing England excites us. Here, the circumstances are different. The match between Australia and Oman was close and excellent for cricket. We shall take advantage of the sun that is here. It will be an amazing game,” he continued.
